Rather than organizing the townhouse as a series of rooms off a corridor separated by locked doors, this Brooklyn home renovation opens up the plan and encourages movement through interconnected public living spaces. By doing so, it extends opportunities for family interaction vertically throughout the house, no longer confining shared spaces to the ground floor. Boundaries are defined but open, and softly-curving boldly-colored fluted millwork highlights thresholds between shared and personal spaces—heightening the transition through them. Slightly stepping the exterior at each floor, the house playfully toys with the neighborhood typology. The fluting articulation of the millwork found on the inside finds itself on the exterior, highlighting the expansive windows that flood the interior spaces with natural daylight and frame views out to the tree-lined streets.
