Founded by Alex Tehranian in 2024, ABSRD is a New York based full-service architecture and design firm working to realize new buildings, adapt existing ones, and transform the public spaces between them.

Collaborating with private clients, developers, cultural institutions, and public agencies, ABSRD aspires to shed the preconceived notions of our everyday surroundings to rethink how we live, how we work, how we play, and how we occupy our cities - and in all cases, rethink how we engage each other and our everyday contexts. We do this by taking the elementary building blocks of our environment and playfully piecing them together in new ways, delivering designs that transcend typology.

ABSRD brings over a decade of experience leading domestic and international projects across scales. Our team is adept at translating our designs into built work - and in doing so, guiding our clients on how to leverage existing site, regulatory, and budgetary constraints. We assist with the navigation of zoning and land-use restrictions, public processes, and city engagement.

Alex Tehranian
Principal, Founder

As Founding Principal, Alex Tehranian leads the firm’s portfolio of diverse projects. Alex established ABSRD to help clients reimagine the way we interact with one another and inhabit our surroundings. He steers the firm in delivering projects that challenge conventional thinking and bring clients’ visions to life in unexpected and elegant ways. 

Prior to founding ABSRD, Alex spent over a decade at numerous award-winning firms in New York City and Los Angeles, including ODA, SOM, REX, and NMDA. There he was responsible for overseeing the design and realization of over 6 million square feet of residential, commercial, cultural, infrastructure, and master planning projects across the US, Europe, China, and the Middle East - most notably the Four Seasons Hotel and Residences in Deer Valley’s East Village, Utah; the Pendry Hotel and Residences at The Wharf in Washington, DC; The Arcadia Residences in Brooklyn, NY; and the conversion of Manhattan’s iconic Waldorf Astoria hotel into luxury condos in Manhattan, NY.

Alex received his Master of Architecture from Rice University and his Bachelor of Finance from Georgetown University. He is a Registered Architect in New York.
